Vanessa Carlton
Showbox - Seattle, WA - November 6, 2002
by Kevin (blackvulture)

This little epic begins September 17th when I first find out she was returning to Seattle. I was extatic because the Goo Goo Dolls tour did not stop by the Northwest. I had seen her in June for a private performance but I was in need of this show!
So a couple weeks ago, I get my ticket, then on KISS I hear they are giving away passes to a special Preshow party where you get to hear Vanessa do soundcheck and she does a meet and greet with the winner. You gotta win your way in. I was caller 16 out of 25 like twice, Dan (DCinSEA) was 24 of 25 once. We could not win! So I try begging. I beg all the DJs, none would budge, one was even an ass to me.
Fast forward to today. This afternoon she did 2 radio interviews. First she went to KISS and Marcus D(the ass) interviewed her and then she performed "Pretty Baby". It was very nice! Then the next hour she went to STAR and did an interview, and played "A Thousand Miles" and "Ordinary Day". I will have the audio from both interviews online soon.
After the radio interviews are over I get ready to go and am out the door by about 5:15pm. I'm on the freeway heading to the show, listening to KISS, when Marcus D says, if you get to the Showbox before 6pm, talk to Cabana Boy and you might get to meet her. So I hear this on the radio and I floor it. I gotta get there before 6! So I run into a bit of traffic once I hit downtown, no big suprise but I get off the freeway around 5:45pm. I'm driving along the street the Showbox is on, I see the bus parked a few blocks away, I thought that was odd cause every time I've been there before the bus is parked in the lot beside the Showbox. But I pull into that lot, and get a parking spot. $13, not too bad since its RIGHT there. So I grab my stuff and head to the front doors where KISS had a booth set up, I found out the skinny. You had to enter, for a chance to go inside for the preparty. I got there about 5:55pm btw. So I enter my name, wait like 2 minutes and Cabana Boy ask the people standing around, most all already had won their passes, there was only another dude and me that had entered. However they were giving away two passes to go inside. But it had to be done right, first he drew the other guys name, then he drew my name! I WON!!! Along with the preshow pass I got 2 concert tickets. lol Didn't really need those.

So they usher us inside, we sit down at the bar area, in view of the stage but set back. Right as we got in Sasha did his soundcheck. Then the trumpet player did his, then Nate did his drum soundcheck. Each person had like 10-15min to do their thing. So we all just sat around for it. Then Vanessa came out to do her soundcheck... its about 6:45.
Basically I saw 2 Vanessa concerts tonight. She started off with "C'est La Vie". Then she was getting on Jessie's case a bit cause the previous shows the pace had been too fast for the next song which turned out to be "Rinse". I got to hear the new bridge and it was really cool! After that she was playing some music I didn't recognize and she was singing "She Floats"! Brand new song I'd never heard before! Then she did "Sway" while walking around the stage, and finished off with the whole band rocking "Unsung".
For Kevin I totally enjoyed that! Then she went backstage for a few and came out and was signing autographs for the winners about 7:15pm. When she came to me she signed the promo pic they'd given us, she signed it "For Kevin" so I loved it! And I had another winner there take a pic with her and me together. After the pic I gave her a little card I'd made a head of time with my website URL and a short note. She saw the "blackvulture" part and said "OH I've seen you before"(meaning on the board) That blew my mind! She knew me!!!
Then she finsihed siging and talking to the others at which time we had to go back outside and get in line. That was about 7:30pm That worried me a little cause I wanted front and center and I knew there was already a line. The moment I step out of the doors, I hear "hey that's Kevin!" I look over and see a dude I hadnt seen before but it was Dan(Rosweller11). So I talk to him for a sec, then go back to my truck and stash my camera and signed pic, then go back and hang with him a bit more. There were 2 girls outside there that didnt have tickets so I sold them the 2 freebies I had got. $20 for the two. I wanted more but it they didnt have change and I spent my change on parking. So They got a hell of a deal! After a few minutes I see Dan(DCinSEA) come down with his wife. So we talk for a minute, then find out that there was 2 ways into the club... the main enterance, or go into the bar part, and go in that way, we decide we would try the bar, so we go inside. And after a couple minutes they open the gate and let us in, BEFORE they opened the main door. So we head right for the stage and get the prime spots!! Right in front of her piano.

We wait around for about an hour and at 9pm Ben Lee takes the stage. Let me just say I was expecting the worst! I had downloaded one or two mp3s, I'd seen pics of the currly haired Aussy. I mean I was expecting the worst... well I'll say this, he held his own! He had some fans of his own there, one group of girls to my right were only there for him and left after his set. Some interesting notes... at one point he took a request and one of the girls shouted "Love Song" and he was like "I'm not sure if I remember all the words, you wanna come up and sing it with me?" So these 2 girls get up on stage with him and he sings the song and the one standing beside him gets to like sing into the mic with him. Very cool if you ask me! During Ben's last song he was eyeballin our general area then made a mad run and stage dove, nearly taged DC with his shoe, but he put him back on the stage, and he did the same again, but Ben like crushed this one girl in the front, broke her watch even. She was one of those Ben fans. lol She was okay tho.
Before Vanessa's set there was a girl, about 4'11" behind me, we'd been talking on and off while waiting so I decided I'd not be a total jerk and swapped places with her so she could see. I was still easily able to see over her since I'm nearly a foot and a half taller.

Vanessa

I heard the Pink Floyd intro music and knew it was about to start. Around 10:15pm Vanessa came on stage, and went from the intro music into...
C'est La Vie. Just her and the pinao, it was perfect. Then she said the next song was NOT about her father and began...
Papa. I noticed a couple lyric differances from what I'd known, I'll work on those later. Towards the end of the song the rest of the band got on stage and right as she ended Papa they started in with...
Unsung. Its a pure rock song, plain and simple. It was weird cause with the first two songs I was diggin' it just her and the piano, but Unsung really livens up the set! After the song is over she gets up and grabs the mic and while the band is playing she sings the new bridge while walking around the stage, then sits back down at the piano and begins...
Rinse. After that song she introduced her band memebers at which time they played...
Prince. After that song she said she has a new video coming out tomorrow and it WAS banned by MTV. They seem to have a problem with any sort of bondage, so because her video has a guy duct taped, she resubmited the video with the tape blurred out. So once we see the video we will know what it really is... "all that for this sweet song" she said as they began an acoustic version of....
Pretty Baby. That was incredible! As a BSide for this single, she had BETTER include a studio acoustic version similar to what she did. After Pretty Baby, the band left the stage and she said it would just be us for a little while. And the next song she would originally play at open mic nights when most the audiance was drunk and pissed off.
Swindler. That was really good. Then she talked about how she had just done a concert with Neil Young for autistic children, and the next song made many of them cry, and she said she didnt want any of us to cry. hahaha
Wanted, it does have a funky effect on people. But she can really put forth power on that one. Before the song was over the band came back on stage and once it was over Vanessa got up and grabed the mic again for....
Sway. The entire song she was walking around on the stage and sat on a stool for a bit and sat on her piano bench... and I gotta say DAMN that was sexy! I was lovin that entire part. After the song she played the little riff and gave the history behind ATM and said it was now called....
A Thousand Fucking Miles. Crowd liked it of course. But it suprised me that they liked the next one even more....
Ordinary Day. Entire crowd was singing to it! It was quite nice. Then the band got rockin', she grabed the mic and they began....
Paint It Black. She ROCKED this song! She was all over the stage, and standing on her piano bench for part dancin... It was crazy and hella cool! And it was even more sexy than Sway! I mean she was just... WOW! After the song everyone left the stage. After like a minute or two the band comes back up and starts in with some whale sound effects and then she comes on stage too and performs the new one...
She Floats. I was loving it! New material is always cool as hell! After the song she said she had one more to play, and that of course was...
Twilight. The band had left it was just her on the piano, and that song was so emotional and beautiful, honestly even I got a little choked up. I mean it was overwelming... After that the show was over and as she left the stage she was touching hands of people in the front. I know I sound like a teeniebopper prolly but she touched my hand, I loved it! lol

Me and the 2 Dans hung around and met up with 2 other board people that had showed up, Darren (GuitarDude316) & iokane. They were both pretty cool too. Nate came out and was talking to people, so we got a group pic with him, and I told him it was a good show. Ben Lee was still up at the merchandise booth so I went over to him, shook his hand and told him I thought he did a pretty good show.

Security then had people go outside and all of us online ppl went down to scope out the bus. Then after a couple minutes they moved the bus up the street, so we went back up to the Showbox, and Vanessa came out with a small army of guards. But we stayed by the bus for a while. While waiting there was a drunk dude that kept picking a fight and got into like 2 nice little street fights, when Security broke up both. The drunk guy then called the cops, dumbass since it was his fault. While waiting, 2 other guys totally go at it fists flyin, they bounce off a car onto the curb right when the cops show up! So the cops are dealing with those two and nothing really happens with the first dumbass. FINALLY he went away. And we all kept waitng. Finally one dude came out and said she was already asleep. There was only like 8 of us waiting out there, that was kinda disappointing she didn't come back out. Even after all the crazies had gone. By then it was about 12:35am and we all decided to call it a night.
All in all I honestly have to say it was the best concert of my life! I've been to many, but this one topped it. I got to meet her again, and for something more than JUST the pic, I actually got to talk to her. And then a flawless concert. Best show of my life!
