BIGdumbFACE
Showbox Theater - Seattle, WA - March 16, 2001

The Night Before

I hear on the radio that Big Dumb Face is in the studio and will be doing an interview and performance on the air, so I throw a tape in and record it. They do a short interview and then play for about 20 minutes. After which time they do some more interview and have a give-away to the listeners. Callers 30-34 get copies of their CD, and jokeingly caller #6 gets Abe Castelson... the one guy who did not show up for the interview. I figure I'll call and try for a CD. It rings and the producer answers "You're caller #6. A winner, please hold on." So I'm thinking, wow! how cool! Wonder what I win since I obviously ain't getting this Abe guy? After waiting on hold for a couple minutes I hear "Hey this is Wes, what's your name?" I couldn't believe it! But I got to talk to him and the band for a couple minutes. He said they would be doing 3 Limp songs at the show (but they never did). And that was about it. I didn't really win anything, but just for the chance to talk to 'em was really cool.

Concert Review

A guy that goes by "El Greco" opened the show at 7pm. He was surprisingly entertaining. He played for about 30 minutes. His show was a mix of metal (done with an acoustic guitar) and some pretty funny lyrics. He closed his set with a song called the "Super Dance" which he said will be the newest craze across the nation. The catch line for the song is "Don't look at your watch, grab your crotch." It was quite entertaining.

I had no idea what to expect going into this concert! But Wes, being the showman that he is, delivered spectacularly. I'm not sure which song they opened with but it was very heavy giving setting a good tone for the rest of the concert. I think it was about 3 songs in, that they started playing some very country sounding guitar solos with Kyle playing harmonica even; all of which lead into them playing their single "Duke Lion". That was probably my favorite of the night. Somewhere in the mix they even played a Slayer cover.

Overall it was a good concert. I'd probably rate it about a 6 or 7 out of 10. If I'd known some of the songs better, it would have helped. But I only got the CD about a week ago so I only vaguely knew the songs. The mosh pit wasn't too bad. I gave it space so it didn't bother me too much. At one point a guy who works for the band came thru the audience getting people to promise to get crazy when the band did... it worked. There was one crazy dude in a red cap that seemed almost too enthused about the band. I just thought that was interesting considering this was only the first show of the tour.

"You've see the rest, he is the best
He's the best and his name is Duke Lion."
